History of Bay

• Established in 1887 as a civil township of Charlevoix County.
• Horton Bay was founded in 1876 as a lumbering community by pioneer settler Samuel Horton, and was named for him.
• The Horton Bay post office opened February 27, 1879 with Alonzo Stroud as first postmaster. The name was shortened from Horton's Bay to Horton Bay on October 12, 1894, and the post office closed January 15, 1910.

• Horton Bay General Store, 05115 Boyne City Road, listed on the National Register of Historic Places September 23, 1991. A two-story clapboard gable-front Late Victorian commercial building put up in 1876 or 1877 under William H. Ohle.

The Bay Economy

• Founded on lumbering. Horton Bay grew around a sawmill operation in the 1870s, which is what put the general store there in 1876 or 1877.
