History. The Township of Brandon was created in 1837 and named to honor the ancestral home of settlers from Brandon, Vermont. Amos Orton and his family migrated from upstate New York in 1839, traveling by boat and ox cart and working north through Troy and Pontiac on muddy Indian trails. Orton built a log house in 1839 and a small grist mill on Kearsley Creek in 1848; a much larger mill followed in 1856, powered by a dam and mill pond and still standing today. Ortonville was platted in 1866 and incorporated as a village in 1902. The Old Mill is now owned by the Village of Ortonville, operated by the Ortonville Historical Society as a museum, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Local economy. A rural northern suburb and bedroom community, generally more affordable than nearby Oakland County suburbs (median home price around $324,000).
