About Royal Oak, Michigan
Royal Oak is a lively inner-ring suburb of Detroit in Oakland County, best known for a walkable, redeveloped downtown packed with restaurants, bars, and live-music venues, and for hosting most of the Detroit Zoo. Its name traces to an 1819 expedition when Territorial Governor Lewis Cass compared a giant oak here to the tree that hid England's King Charles II. Decades of tree-planting earned it the nickname 'The City of Trees.'
History of Royal Oak
- Founded in 1819 when Territorial Governor Lewis Cass and his party left Detroit on horseback en route to negotiate the Saginaw Treaty; the site was named after a large oak tree.
- Cass reportedly named it after telling the story of King Charles II hiding in an English oak (the 'Royal Oak') in Boscobel Wood to escape the Roundheads after the Battle of Worcester.
- Incorporated as a village in 1891 and as a city in 1921.
