Early settlers brought the name from Livonia, New York, which took it from the historic Baltic region now shared by Estonia and Latvia. For more than a century the township grew wheat, corn, oats and potatoes and tended apple orchards.
Livonia became a city in 1950, partly to collect tax revenue from the Detroit Race Course inside its borders. Its official motto today is "Families First."
