The Fox Theatre, built in 1928 with over 5,000 seats, remains one of the largest surviving movie palaces of the 1920s.
We Know Detroit
Detroit has undergone remarkable revitalization with a booming tech industry and thriving food scene. Corktown is Detroit's oldest neighborhood, featuring historic Federal-style homes. The Detroit Riverwalk stretches over 4 miles along the Detroit River with stunning views of Windsor, Canada. The city began in 1701 as a French fort founded by Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac, and its name comes from the French word for strait, after the Detroit River. Woodward Avenue carries two firsts: the first mile of concrete road in the United States, laid in 1909 between Six Mile and Seven Mile Roads, and the first four-way, three-color traffic signal, designed by police officer William Potts and installed at Woodward and Michigan Avenues in 1920. Belle Isle, a 982-acre island park designed in part by Frederick Law Olmsted, is larger than New York's Central Park and holds the oldest continuously operating conservatory in the country. Hitsville U.S.A. at 2648 West Grand Boulevard, where Motown recorded its hits, is now the Motown Museum, and Detroit is also recognized as the birthplace of techno.
