Who Shift4 Is

Shift4 trades on the New York Stock Exchange as FOUR and describes itself as “a global leader in integrated payments and commerce technology.” It supplies the platform, the hardware and the payment processing. AppWT is a partner, not a processor. Shift4 holds the merchant and processing relationship and sets its own rates and terms.

Point of Sale and Commerce Platforms

Shift4 Dine, for restaurants and hospitality

Shift4 Dine is Shift4's all-in-one restaurant and hospitality platform. Shift4 publishes custom floor plans with real-time table status, mobile ordering on its handheld device, first-party online ordering it describes as commission-free, and QR code ordering and pay-at-table where the check closes itself in the POS. The hardware line runs from a workstation to a handheld, a tablet and a kitchen display, and Shift4 states a lifetime replacement warranty on it.

If you were quoted “SkyTab” before, this is that product. SkyTab is the earlier name for the same line and skytab.com now redirects to Shift4 Dine. Nothing was discontinued, it was renamed.

Shift4 Venue, for stadiums, arenas and entertainment venues

Shift4 Venue covers concessions, retail, parking and ticketing across a venue, with traditional POS, self-service kiosks, mobile ordering and contactless payments. Shift4 describes its ticketing role as integration with third-party ticketing platforms rather than a ticketing system of its own. Shift4 names Allegiant Stadium, the Florida Gators, the Tampa Bay Rays, LAFC at BMO Stadium, DC United and Austin FC at Q2 Stadium among its sports and entertainment customers.

Shift4Shop, for ecommerce

Shift4Shop is a hosted, turnkey ecommerce platform, and Shift4Shop invites agencies to build client stores on it. The hosting runs in Shift4Shop's own facilities, so the split is clean: AppWT builds, designs and maintains the store, and Shift4Shop hosts and operates the platform underneath it. Shift4Shop's partner program is entered by application rather than open signup.

Payment Devices

Two Shift4 devices matter to most businesses, and they do different jobs.

Shift4 One

A standalone handheld that runs on its own without a separate POS. Shift4 publishes Dynamic Currency Conversion on it, so an international customer can be charged in a familiar currency, and automated tax-refund handling for tax-free shopping, which Shift4 states is supplied through Global Blue. Shift4 positions it beyond restaurants, not only in them.

Shift4 Duo

A mobile companion device that extends an existing point-of-sale system rather than replacing it. Shift4 states it integrates to various point-of-sale software solutions. If a business already has a POS it is happy with, this is the one that adds mobile and tableside payment without a rebuild.

Processing, Security and Reach

Shift4 states that its acquiring services cover both card-present and card-not-present transactions, and that its platform provides PCI-validated point-to-point encryption and tokenization. Shift4 publishes support for 150+ currencies, with domestic processing in North America and Europe and cross-border processing elsewhere. Shift4 also sells crypto and stablecoin acceptance as a named platform product, and announced a stablecoin settlement platform in December 2025.

The Shift4 Marketplace

Rather than building secondary features from scratch, a business on Shift4 Dine can switch on pre-integrated third-party software from Shift4's Marketplace. The live directory currently lists 70 applications across 13 industry categories and 6 countries, and Shift4 publishes 1,200+ technology integrations across the wider platform.

Delivery and inventory are the two that come up most often. DoorDash, DoorDash Drive and Uber Eats are all currently listed, as are Craftable and Yellow Dog Software for restaurant inventory and back-office management.

The Marketplace is scoped to the Shift4 Dine point-of-sale software. I check the live directory before promising any specific integration, because the catalog changes and an integration announced years ago is not proof it is listed today.

What AppWT Actually Does Here

Shift4 supplies the platform, the devices and the processing. My side is the work around it: building or rebuilding the website so it fits the way the business actually sells, doing the integration between the site and the platform, getting online ordering and checkout behaving properly on a phone, and staying available when something needs changing afterward.

If card processing itself is the question rather than the technology, that is a separate relationship and it has its own page at Merchant Services. Keeping them apart is deliberate, because they are two different partners doing two different jobs.
