• The area was surveyed in 1817 under a plan by Michigan territorial governor Lewis Cass, and John Daniels settled the land in 1823, with early families arriving from Birmingham, Royal Oak, New York, and Vermont.
• The township was first organized as Ossewa Township on July 12, 1830, then renamed Southfield Township seventeen days later, taking its name from its position in the 'south fields' of Bloomfield Township.
