About Brownstown Charter Township
Also known as. A Downriver community. "Where the Future Looks Brighter" (official motto).
History. Established April 5, 1827 by the Michigan Territorial Council, a decade before Michigan statehood, with Moses Roberts as first supervisor and an original size of about 43 square miles. One of Wayne County's nine original townships laid out on the six-mile grid called for in the Northwest Ordinance of 1787. Named for Adam Brown, who was taken by the Wyandot, raised among them, married a Native woman, and rose to become a tribal leader. The Battle of Brownstown and Battle of Maguaga were fought in the area during the War of 1812. The township was split into three non-contiguous segments as Flat Rock, Rockwood, and Woodhaven incorporated in the early 1960s.
Local economy. A General Motors facility on Sibley and King Roads assembled the Chevrolet Volt battery pack and anchors the township's manufacturing base. An Amazon distribution center opened in 2015 along the I-75 logistics corridor. US-24 (Telegraph Road) and I-75 support a shift from farming to a regional business and warehousing hub. Kurtzhals Farm, established in 1893, remains one of the largest working farms in the township.
Culture and community. The Pointe Mouillee Waterfowl Festival, held each September, has been a Downriver tradition since 1947. HawkFest is a free family event each September at Lake Erie Metropark built around the raptor migration. The township hosts a Brownstown Summer Festival. Brownstown identifies strongly with the broader Downriver region of southern Wayne County.
What makes Brownstown Charter Township distinct. The Detroit River Hawk Watch at Lake Erie Metropark is an internationally significant migration count that has tallied as many as 600,000 raptors in a single fall; in 2024 it counted 79,317 raptors of 16 species. The township was named for a white man who was raised by the Wyandot and became one of their chiefs. It touches the southernmost point of the Detroit River and shares an international water boundary with Amherstburg, Ontario. Its map is split into three separate pieces because three cities incorporated out of it in the early 1960s.
