Web Design for Buena Vista Charter Township, Michigan

Buena Vista Charter Township is a working-class community in Saginaw County that borders the city of Saginaw and grew up around sawmills, railroads, and the Great Lakes Bay region's industrial economy. Its name is Spanish for 'good view,' and the land was known to the Ojibwe as Tik-wak-baw-hawning. The township drew national attention in 2013 when its school district became one of the first in Michigan history to be dissolved for insolvency.

About Buena Vista Charter Township

Also known as. Buena Vista (Spanish for 'good view').

History. The area was known to the Ojibwe as Tik-wak-baw-hawning; the township, whose name means 'good view' in Spanish, was established in 1849. Fifield was a former settlement in the township centered on a sawmill with a Pere Marquette Railroad station; its post office operated briefly around 1898-1900. Crow Island, an unincorporated community within the township, had a post office that operated intermittently between 1882 and 1895. The township now contains the census-designated places of Buena Vista and Robin Glen-Indiantown. On July 30, 2013, the Saginaw Intermediate School District dissolved the Buena Vista School District, splitting its territory among the Bridgeport-Spaulding, Saginaw City, and Frankenmuth districts.

Local economy. Part of the Saginaw-area industrial economy in the Great Lakes Bay Region, historically tied to sawmilling, the railroads, and later automotive and metal-casting work concentrated around the neighboring city of Saginaw. The Buena Vista School District was for decades a significant local public employer until its 2013 collapse; a portion of the district's Ricker Center building was later leased to Delta College for a Saginaw campus. Population has declined from 10,318 in 2000 to 7,664 in 2020, reflecting broader deindustrialization pressures across the Saginaw area.

Culture and community. Predominantly African American community (about 58% Black in 2020), with a distinct identity separate from the city of Saginaw it borders. Strong local sports tradition from the former Buena Vista schools: the football team won back-to-back state championships in 1966 and 1967, and the boys basketball program made seven state title appearances between 1979 and 1993, winning four.

What makes Buena Vista Charter Township distinct. Buena Vista School District's 2013 dissolution made it one of the first public school districts in Michigan history to be legally shut down for financial failure; it then existed only as a tax-collecting unit to pay off debts topping $5.7 million. The financial collapse was triggered when the Wolverine Secure Treatment Center ended its contract in 2012, wiping out about $400,000 in annual revenue and forcing the district to repay state money it had already spent, after which enrollment fell 47% in a single year. Mark Macon, a Buena Vista product, was named Michigan's Mr. Basketball in 1987 and went on to a college and NBA career. The township's Spanish name, 'good view,' sits oddly against its flat, industrial Saginaw-Valley setting.
