Clayton in Genesee County is a 34-square-mile charter township on the southwest edge of the Flint metro area, home to about 7,460 people. Once farm country first known as Miller's Settlement, it now blends subdivisions with open land and shares the small village of Lennon on its western border. The community is served by the Swartz Creek and Flushing school districts and sits on the creek an early settler personally named.

AppWT serves Clayton (Clayton Charter Township) and the surrounding Michigan area from Livonia, Michigan.

About Clayton (Clayton Charter Township)

History. The area was first known as Miller's Settlement after its first settler, Adam Miller, who came from New York, cleared the land, and named the local stream Swartz Creek. Because no township name had been submitted to the state office, a state official chose the name 'Clayton' for the new township. Clayton Township was formed on March 25, 1846, splitting the southernmost survey area away from Flushing Township. The Valeria post office opened in 1855 with Andrew N. Felt as postmaster and closed on November 21, 1860. The Village of Lennon lies partially within the township on its western border. Voters approved a 1-mill tax in December 2002 to establish a township police department. A successful recall in 2009 removed township supervisor Bruce Beatty and two trustees. On December 15, 2017 the township began receiving Karegnondi Water Authority water.

Local economy. Historically a farming township that has transformed into a suburban bedroom community of subdivisions on the west side of the Flint metro area. Local government services include a township-run police department (established by the 2002 millage) and a fire arrangement cooperating with Swartz Creek. Central Michigan Railway trackage runs through the township.

Culture and community. Community identity is tied to the Swartz Creek and Flushing school districts that split coverage of the township. Genesee District Library serves township residents. The nearby Village of Lennon anchors the township's western edge.

What makes Clayton (Clayton Charter Township) distinct. The township got its name essentially by default: a state official picked 'Clayton' only because residents never submitted a name. Between 2004 and 2008 the township police department issued over $516,000 in tickets, making it one of the top three ticket-writing agencies in Genesee County. The township's 1878 hall no longer stands in Clayton at all; it was relocated to the Crossroads Village historical attraction in 1976.
