History. European-American settlement began in 1834 with brothers Hiram and Samuel Jenison, for whom the community of Jenison (originally 'Jenisonville') is named. The first sawmills were built on Rush Creek around 1837 by George Ketchum, and the settlement became known as 'George's Town,' later Georgetown. The area was originally home to Peoria and Odawa (Ottawa) Indigenous peoples before European-American settlement. The township was formally established in 1840. Georgetown became a charter township in 1965. The adjacent settlement of Hudsonville was earlier called South Georgetown before being designated 'Hudsonville' by the federal government on February 18, 1872, when the Chicago and West Michigan Railroad spurred Dutch immigration.
Local economy. Largely a residential 'bedroom' community for the Grand Rapids metro area, spanning about 34 square miles. Two school districts, Jenison Public Schools and Hudsonville Public Schools, are among the area's largest institutions and employers.
