History. The land was Chippewa territory. French fur traders arriving before 1800 gave it the name "Grand Blanc," meaning "great white." A competing local legend attributes the name to a large white trader named Fisher, who married into the local Native community and lived near Lake Copneconic. Jacob Stevens became the first settler in 1823, staking a claim along the Saginaw Trail after his original land claim near Detroit proved faulty. Grand Blanc families gathered at the home of Rufus Stevens to organize the Township of Grand Blanc in 1833, formally chartered by the Territory of Michigan on March 9. It was the first unit of government in what became Genesee County. The original township was vastly larger, covering the future Atlas, Burton, Davison, Fenton and Flint areas. By 1843 it had shed Burton, Genesee, Mount Morris and others. In 1837, when Michigan achieved statehood, Grand Blanc was considered as a site for the state capital on the strength of its development and commerce. Lansing was chosen instead. The Pere Marquette Railroad reached the township center in 1864, which triggered the area's growth. By 1873 the settlement was known as Grand Blanc Centre while the original village became Gibsonville. By 1916 the community supported a grade school, a private bank, a flour mill, a grain elevator, a creamery and two churches. The separate City of Grand Blanc incorporated in 1930, and a joint fire department with the city was established in 1939. On September 28, 2025 a gunman attacked a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints meetinghouse in the township, killing four people and setting the building on fire. It remains the deadliest single incident in the township's history.

During World War II, General Motors converted its Grand Blanc plant from automobile production to military tanks, building roughly 17,000 of them including Sherman M-4 and Patton M-48 models. Ascension Genesys Hospital is the township's major regional medical center and one of its largest employers. In September 2024 Ascension's Greater Flint and Metro Detroit operations transferred to Henry Ford Health through a joint venture. Grand Blanc Community Schools is itself a major employer, running a $140.5 million budget with 440 full-time-equivalent teachers across 13 schools for about 7,489 students (2024-25). The economy diversified from 19th-century agriculture into manufacturing, health care, retail and professional services, and the township now functions as the affluent residential and commercial counterweight to Flint. Population climbed steadily from 29,827 (2000) to 37,508 (2010) to 39,846 (2020), making it the largest suburb of Flint. Golf tourism is a real line item: the Ally Challenge draws a national PGA Tour Champions field and its 2018 inaugural alone raised more than $801,000 for southeastern Michigan charities.

Culture and community. Warwick Hills Golf & Country Club at 9057 South Saginaw Road hosted the PGA Tour's Buick Open across 1958-1969 and 1977-2009, a run that produced champions including Tiger Woods, Jim Furyk, Ben Crenshaw, Fred Couples, Vijay Singh and Billy Casper.
