About Grass Lake
Also known as. "Whistle Stop" / "Whistlestop" town, after hometown author Maritta Wolff's 1941 bestselling novel. Depot village (for its landmark 1887 railroad depot).
History. First settlers arrived in 1829, and in 1831 a post office -- the second in Jackson County -- opened at the settlement. Grass Lake Township was created in 1832, with its current boundaries set in 1836. In 1842 the Michigan Central Railroad bypassed the original village and built a depot 1.5 miles to the west, so the village relocated westward to be next to the tracks. In 1887 the village received a Romanesque stone depot designed by architects Spier and Rohns, using stone from the same quarry as the Ann Arbor station. The depot closed in 1956, was gutted by fire in June 1980, and was purchased and restored by the Whistlestop Park Association, reopening in September 1992. The charter township had a population of 6,069 at the 2020 census; the village of Grass Lake had 1,105.
Local economy. Historically built on railroad commerce and shipping farm produce and livestock to market. Today a rural and commuter community positioned between Jackson and Ann Arbor along Interstate 94. Surrounding agriculture and the Waterloo Recreation Area support local tourism.
Culture and community. Vatra Romaneasca, established in 1938 (inaugurated July 3-4, 1938) on Grey Tower Road, is the diocesan center of the Romanian Orthodox Episcopate of America and a significant Romanian religious and cultural institution in the U.S. The Waterloo Farm Museum and Dewey School Museum preserve 19th-century rural life nearby. The Coe House Museum is an 1871 Victorian-era home operated as a local museum. Whistlestop Park surrounds the restored depot with Victorian gardens, a gazebo, and a handmade car shed.
What makes Grass Lake distinct. Native daughter Maritta Wolff grew up in Grass Lake and wrote the 1941 bestseller "Whistle Stop," which became a 1946 film starring George Raft and Ava Gardner.
