History. Established by the Michigan Legislature on March 16, 1847, as Dutch Calvinist separatists led by Dr. Albertus van Raalte emigrated from the Netherlands amid economic hardship. The township originally encompassed present-day Park and Zeeland townships, with Zeeland breaking off in 1851. It was incorporated as a charter township in 1968, and suburban expansion in the late 20th century (roughly 26% growth in the 1970s and 27.5% in the 1980s) converted farmland into subdivisions and commercial corridors along U.S. 31 and Chicago Drive. The township's population reached 38,276 in the 2020 census, up from 35,636 in 2010.

Anchored in West Michigan's advanced-manufacturing corridor, including office/furniture manufacturing (Haworth is headquartered in the Holland area) and food processing (Request Foods).
