Michigan Sugar announced a $65-million-plus desugarization expansion at the Bay City-area factory around 2021. Coal mining was a major early-1900s sector; Bay County's first mine (the Michigan Mine) opened in the 1890s, and the Monitor Coal Company drew immigrant miners from Ohio and Pennsylvania. Agriculture on the township's flat, fertile soils remains an economic base alongside the Euclid Avenue commercial corridor on Bay City's western edge.

The name Kawkawlin comes from the Ojibwe word 'ogaakaaning,' meaning 'place of the pike,' after the fish-rich Kawkawlin River. In a geographic twist, the community of Kawkawlin actually lies in Monitor Township, not in adjacent Kawkawlin Township. The Monitor Coal Company was the last coal mine in Bay County to close, shutting down in 1947.
