The hamlet of Goodison is named for English immigrant William Goodison, who ran the local grist mill; Hemingway dammed Paint Creek and built a grist mill in 1835, and Goodison's post office opened in 1874. The first burial at Paint Creek Cemetery dates to 1832, with the burial ground formally deeded in 1850. Michigan Central Railroad trains stopped at the mill, then known as Goodison's Station.
