First settler was Solomon Russell, who arrived by ox-team in autumn 1836 from Orleans County, New York, and built the first white habitation in the township on section 22 (his hired hands were Robert Rix and William Henry). Samuel Preston, the second settler, arrived in early 1837 from Cayuga County, New York, having paid twelve dollars to have 160 acres located for him in the Grand River Valley in 1836. The town of Oneida was formally organized on March 6, 1838, when the northeast quarter of Eaton County was detached from Bellevue Township. Canada Settlement was founded in June 1839 by Freeman W. Nichols and family (eleven persons) plus Samuel Nixon, who came from London, Canada West (Ontario) with four wagons, cattle, and swine; the group's origin traces to 1836. Township firsts: first birth was Horace Preston (son of Samuel Preston); first marriage was Robert Rix to Mrs. A. Carr; first death was a child of James Nixon at Canada Settlement. In the winter of 1839, twenty-seven of the township's thirty-two inhabitants came down with measles, but none died. The Detroit, Lansing & Northern Railway ran along the Grand River through the northeast of the township.
