History. Organized March 11, 1837 from a portion of Berrien Township; part of the area was first known as "Feather Settlement" in the 1830s. Originally included what became Lake Township, which split off in 1846; the St. Joseph River became the eastern township boundary in 1847. The village of Berrien Springs (the only incorporated municipality in the township) served as the Berrien County seat starting in 1837 before county government later moved to St. Joseph. Became a Charter Township in 1988; population was 9,226 at the 2020 census. Name origin is genuinely disputed: theories include Gov. Stevens T. Mason naming it for a supposed Native chief "Oronoko" (no record such a chief existed), the South American Orinoco River, the literary character Oroonoko, and an "oronoco" tobacco variety.
