About Plymouth Charter Township
History. Pioneers from New England began settling and farming the area around 1825, drawn to heavily wooded land with rich soil, springs, and the point where two streams meet to form the main branch of the Rouge River. After the common council voted to name the community 'Plymouth,' the township incorporated in April 1827 under a law signed by Territorial Governor Lewis Cass; the first township meeting was held at the homestead of John Tibbits. Early leader Abram B. Markham built the first gristmill in the area. The City of Plymouth later separated from the township; Plymouth Township became a Charter Township on April 19, 1977, gaining protection from annexation and improved taxing controls. As of the 2020 census the township had a population of 27,938.
Local economy. Home to headquarters and major operations of foreign-owned automotive suppliers, including Aisin World Corp. of America, Hella Corporate Center USA, Adient, and Metaldyne. Transformed from agricultural roots into a suburban residential area with distinct industrial and recreational zones. Saint John's Resort (the former Inn at St. John's) anchors hospitality and conference business. Median household income was estimated around $90,780 (2007).
Culture and community. USA Hockey Arena (formerly Compuware Arena) is home to USA Hockey's National Team Development Program and hosted the 2017 IIHF Women's World Championship. Was home to the Ontario Hockey League's Plymouth Whalers until 2015, when the team was sold and relocated to become the Flint Firebirds. Hosted the Detroit Ignition indoor soccer team, which reached the championship finals in all three seasons of its existence (through 2008-09). Hines Park and the scenic Edward N. Hines Drive run through the township, with the Gunsolly Mills recreation area sited where the Ford family once operated a carding mill.
What makes Plymouth Charter Township distinct. The township forms a ring completely surrounding the separately incorporated City of Plymouth, so the two share a name and 1827 origin but run independent governments. Both the township and city trace their common heritage to the 1827 township of Plymouth; the Daisy BB gun brand was born in the adjacent City of Plymouth as the Plymouth Iron Windmill Company (1882), which bundled air guns with windmills before leaving Michigan for Arkansas in 1958. From 1995 the township briefly ran a consolidated fire department with the City of Plymouth, contributing about 25% of its budget, before that agreement ended.
