History. Robert Fleming bought the first plot of land in the area during the Michigan Territory era in 1823, and a sawmill was built in 1826. Frains Lake was founded in 1835 by Michael Frain of New York, and the Geer one-room schoolhouse was built in 1880 (replacing an 1829 log structure). The Esek Pray Trail runs through the township, named for Esek Pray, a founding leader of the State of Michigan, and passes 19th-century homes and one-room schoolhouses.
