A stagecoach-stop postal drop opened in 1844; an official U.S. post office named 'Texas' operated from June 1874 until it closed permanently in 1901, after which the little village of Texas faded away. Remained largely rural and agricultural through the 19th century while other parts of the county industrialized. Incorporated as a charter township by resolution on September 23, 1985. Population grew from 14,697 in 2010 to 17,691 at the 2020 census.
