About Vienna Township
History. Charles McLean and Sylvester Hubbard, the first settlers, arrived near Pine Run Creek in 1833. A community was platted and recorded as Vienna, but when the township was organized under that name in 1837, the town itself was renamed Pine Run. The Pine Run post office cycled through names, becoming Thetford in 1844, reverting to Pine Run in 1852, and finally closing in 1905. Clio, entirely surrounded by the township, was first named Varna after an early settler; the Pere Marquette Railroad put a station there in 1861, and the name was changed in 1866 to Clio, the Greek muse of history. On November 27, 2017, Vienna and the northern loop of municipalities began receiving water from the Karegnondi Water Authority pipeline.
Local economy. A mix of agricultural and residential land along the M-54 (Saginaw Road) and M-57 (Vienna Road) corridors. Most students attend Clio Area Schools, with portions in Birch Run Area and Mt. Morris Consolidated districts. Auto City Speedway is a long-running commercial draw pulling racing crowds into the township each summer. Around the 2000 census the median household income was roughly $46,863 with a poverty rate near 8.3%.
Culture and community. The Clio Area Amphitheater has presented outdoor summer concerts across many genres since 1987, with a modest gate charge and season passes. Clio Cast & Crew, a community theatre serving the area for decades, bought its own home in the former Theatre 57 building on West Vienna Road in 2003. Auto City Speedway runs short-track stock-car racing on its paved half-mile, quarter-mile, and Figure 8 tracks every Saturday night from April through September. Local attractions include the Clio Center for the Arts, Clio Area Fireman's Park, and the Clio Bowling Arcade.
What makes Vienna Township distinct. The name 'Vienna' ended up attached to the township while the very town first platted as Vienna was renamed Pine Run in 1837. The surrounded city takes its name from Clio, the Greek muse of history, chosen in 1866. Auto City Speedway was reportedly founded in 1955 by an agitated racer after a rival promoter told him, 'if you don't like it, go build your own racetrack.' The speedway was paved with high-density asphalt in 1986, a bold move that soon drew some of the Midwest's fastest cars.
