Your business can rank on page one of Google and still be invisible when a buyer asks ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google AI Overviews for a recommendation. That is because each of these platforms follows its own citation rules, and those rules are very different from each other.

This post breaks down exactly how each platform picks its sources, what that means for a small business owner, and the specific steps you can take to show up in all three.

Why One Strategy Will Not Cover All Three Platforms

Most business owners assume AI search works like regular Google - get to the top and you win everywhere. The data says otherwise.

Analysis of 680 million citations found that only 11 percent of domains are cited by both ChatGPT and Perplexity. Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode cite the same URLs only 13.7 percent of the time, despite reaching similar conclusions.

That means a brand doing well in one platform can be completely absent from the others. You need to understand each platform's logic before you can build content that works across all of them.

How ChatGPT Decides What to Cite

ChatGPT pulls from two layers: its training data and live web retrieval through SearchGPT, which uses Bing's index as its primary web data source. That second point is critical for small businesses.

If you have been ignoring Bing Webmaster Tools, you are invisible to ChatGPT's live search regardless of how well you rank on Google.

When it comes to content type, ChatGPT leans on authoritative, Wikipedia-style writing. ChatGPT concentrates on Wikipedia, Reddit, Forbes, and Business Insider as its top citation sources.

What this means for your website: write in a clear, declarative voice. State facts directly. Avoid vague marketing language. Pages that read like an objective reference entry perform better than pages built around sales copy.

ChatGPT also looks for external validation - mentions on platforms like Reddit, Quora, and G2 serve as vital social proof.

How Perplexity Decides What to Cite

Perplexity operates on a completely different model. Unlike ChatGPT's hybrid of training data and selective web retrieval, Perplexity performs a real-time web search for every single query. There is no knowledge cutoff. New content can be cited by Perplexity within hours of being indexed.

Freshness is the top signal. Perplexity prioritizes very recent content - pages under 30 days old receive 3.2 times more citations.

Community content also carries significant weight. Perplexity ranks Reddit content in 46.7 percent of its top citations and applies a 2-to-3 month content decay window, so freshness and community-backed content are critical.

Practical steps for Perplexity visibility:

  • Update existing pages regularly - do not let blog posts or service pages go stale
  • Use numbered lists and clear inline citations within your own content, mirroring how Perplexity formats its answers
  • Participate in or encourage discussion about your business on community platforms
  • Publish original data, case results, or findings your clients have not seen anywhere else

How Google AI Overviews Decide What to Cite

Google AI Overviews stay closest to traditional SEO signals, but that relationship is shifting. In mid-2025, 76 percent of AI Overview citations came from top-10 organic results. By early 2026, that figure had dropped to 38 percent in Ahrefs data and as low as 17 percent in BrightEdge research.

Ranking well still helps, but it is no longer sufficient. Content structure, E-E-A-T signals, and multi-channel brand presence now matter more than position alone.

Format is a major factor. About 78 percent of AI Overviews use list-based formatting, and 61 percent use unordered bullet lists. Structure every page with clear H2 and H3 headings followed immediately by a concise, factual answer.

Research on AI Overview citations shows a diverse mix: authoritative publishers, how-to content with clear structure, and community platforms including Reddit at 21 percent, YouTube at 19 percent, Quora at 14 percent, and LinkedIn at 13 percent.

The One Content Rule That Helps Across All Three

One finding applies to ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews alike: put your answer first.

Princeton's foundational GEO research found that placing a concise, self-contained answer in the opening paragraph can improve citation likelihood by up to 115 percent.

This is the BLUF principle applied to web content. Do not make the AI read four paragraphs before finding your point. State it in sentence one, then support it with detail below.

Content with statistics, citations, and quotations achieves 30 to 40 percent higher visibility in AI responses. Original data matters most. Become a primary source, not a regurgitator. A custom survey, internal benchmark, or proprietary data from your own clients is worth more than ten well-written summaries.

A Practical Checklist for Small Business Owners

You do not need to rebuild your entire site. Start with these actions:

  • Claim and verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools so ChatGPT's live search can find you
  • Rewrite your top service pages so the main answer appears in the first two sentences
  • Add H2 and H3 headings that mirror the questions your customers actually ask
  • Use bullet lists and numbered steps wherever you explain a process
  • Refresh at least one page per month so Perplexity sees active, current content
  • Build a presence on at least one community platform relevant to your industry
  • Earn press mentions, directory listings, or third-party reviews that name your business clearly

The Bigger Picture for Michigan Small Businesses

Your company now needs visibility across search engines, AI overviews, chat interfaces, and discovery layers that do not always send traffic back. Many buyers will see your business name in an AI answer before they ever visit your website.

Generative Engine Optimization in 2026 is the operating discipline for improving how an organization is found, understood, mentioned, cited, and represented across AI-assisted discovery. That is a broader task than traditional SEO, but the building blocks are things you can control: clear writing, strong structure, fresh updates, and a credible presence beyond your own domain.

If you are not sure where your site stands today across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews, AppWT can audit your content and give you a clear action plan. To get started, contact us or schedule a call and we will show you exactly where your business appears - and where it does not.
