Your domain name is your permanent address on the internet. Everything else about your website can change -- design, content, hosting, platform -- but your domain name should stay consistent for the life of your business. This makes choosing the right domain one of the most important early decisions you will make.

At AppWT, we advise clients on domain strategy and manage domain portfolios for businesses across Michigan. Here is what we have learned from nearly three decades of helping businesses establish their online presence.

Domain Name Selection Criteria

Memorability

Can someone hear your domain name once and type it correctly from memory? If you have to spell it out, explain it, or clarify it, the domain is working against you. Short, common words beat clever portmanteaus or unusual spellings.

Brandability

The best domain names become brands themselves. They are unique enough to trademark, easy to pronounce, and do not get confused with existing businesses. Google, Amazon, and Stripe are brandable names. "BestWebDesignServicesCompany.com" is not.

Extension

.com remains the gold standard for business domains. It carries the most trust and is what people type by default. If you cannot get the .com, consider whether the alternative extension (.co, .io, .net) is worth the risk of lost traffic to the .com holder.

Protecting Your Domain

Register Variations

Secure common misspellings, plural/singular versions, and major alternative extensions. Redirect them all to your primary domain. This protects your brand and captures traffic from typos.

Privacy Protection

Domain WHOIS privacy hides your personal contact information from public domain registration records. This prevents spam, unwanted solicitation, and potential security risks. Most registrars offer this for free or a small fee.

Auto-Renewal

Enable auto-renewal on all important domains. Expired domains can be registered by anyone -- including competitors, domain squatters, and spammers. Losing a domain to expiration can be devastating and expensive to recover.

Domain Management for Growing Businesses

As businesses grow, domain management becomes more complex. Subdomains for different purposes (blog.yourbusiness.com, shop.yourbusiness.com), separate domains for marketing campaigns, and domains for future products all need to be tracked and renewed.

Consolidate all domains under one registrar and one account. Document who has access, when domains renew, and what each domain is used for. Domain management neglect has caused real business disruptions when renewals are missed.

Domain and SEO

While exact-match domains (like "detroitplumber.com") used to provide significant SEO advantages, their impact has diminished. Focus on a brandable domain that you can build authority around rather than trying to stuff keywords into your domain name.

AppWT provides domain strategy consulting, registration management, and portfolio oversight for businesses that want professional management of their digital real estate.
