E-commerce email marketing is not about sending newsletters. It is about automated sequences that deliver the right message at the right time based on customer behavior. Here are the sequences every online store needs.

1. Welcome Series (New Subscribers)

Trigger: New email signup. Send 3-5 emails over 10 days introducing your brand, sharing your best products, providing a first-purchase incentive, and setting expectations for future emails. This sequence alone can drive 5-10% of email revenue.

2. Abandoned Cart Recovery

Trigger: Cart abandoned. Send 3 emails: reminder at 1 hour, product benefits at 24 hours, discount incentive at 72 hours. Expected recovery rate: 5-15% of abandoned carts.

3. Browse Abandonment

Trigger: Viewed product but did not add to cart. Send 1-2 emails showing the viewed products with reviews and similar items. This captures intent earlier in the buying process.

4. Post-Purchase

Trigger: Order completed. Send order confirmation, shipping notification, delivery confirmation, product care/usage tips (3 days after delivery), and review request (7 days). This builds loyalty and generates reviews.

5. Win-Back Sequence

Trigger: No purchase in 60-90 days. Send 3 emails: "We miss you" with new products, exclusive returning customer offer, final "Should we say goodbye?" This reactivates lapsed customers before they forget about you.

6. VIP/Loyalty

Trigger: Customer reaches spending threshold or purchase count. Send exclusive offers, early access to new products, and loyalty rewards. Your top 20% of customers generate 80% of revenue -- treat them accordingly.

Revenue Attribution

Track how much revenue each sequence generates. Most email platforms show revenue per email and per sequence. Use this data to optimize subject lines, timing, and content. Focus your improvement efforts on the sequences that drive the most revenue.
