Google Shopping puts your products directly in front of buyers searching for what you sell. But getting there requires a well-optimized product feed that meets Google requirements and outperforms competitor listings.
Product Feed Essentials
Every product in your feed needs these fields optimized:
Product Title
Include: Brand + Product Name + Key Attributes (size, color, material). Example: "AppWT Custom Leather Laptop Sleeve - 15 inch - Brown." Google uses the title for matching search queries, so include the words customers actually search for.
Product Description
Write 150-500 words describing the product with natural keyword inclusion. Avoid promotional language ("Best deal!") -- Google flags this. Focus on features, materials, dimensions, and use cases.
Product Images
Use high-resolution images (at least 800x800 pixels) on a white background for the main image. Additional images can show the product in use. Avoid watermarks, text overlays, or promotional graphics on images.
Price and Availability
Keep prices accurate to the penny and availability current. Google suspends accounts with repeated price or availability mismatches between the feed and your website.
Common Feed Errors
- Missing GTIN/UPC codes: Required for branded products. Include the barcode number.
- Incorrect product categories: Use Google product taxonomy. Wrong categories reduce visibility.
- Price mismatches: Feed price must match landing page price exactly.
- Image issues: Too small, placeholder images, or text overlays cause disapprovals.
Free Listings vs Shopping Ads
Google offers two Shopping options:
- Free listings: Your products appear in the Shopping tab and organic results. No cost per click. Lower placement than paid ads.
- Shopping ads: Your products appear at the top of search results. Pay per click. Higher visibility and conversion rates.
Start with free listings to test your feed quality, then add Shopping ads for your best-selling products.
