Customers cannot touch, feel, or try your products online. Product photography is the next best thing. Studies show that 75% of online shoppers rely on product photos when making buying decisions.

The Basic Setup

You do not need a professional studio. Here is a setup that works for under $100:

  • Background: White poster board or a $20 fold-out lightbox for small items
  • Lighting: Natural window light (position near a large window) or two $15 LED panels
  • Camera: Your smartphone (iPhone 12+ or equivalent Android produces excellent results)
  • Tripod: $20-$30 smartphone tripod for consistent, sharp images
  • Editing: Free tools like Canva or Snapseed for basic adjustments

Essential Shot List

For every product, capture these images:

  1. Hero shot: Clean front view on white background. This is your main listing image.
  2. All angles: Front, back, sides, top. Customers want to see the complete product.
  3. Detail shots: Close-ups of texture, material, stitching, labels, or unique features.
  4. Scale reference: Product next to a common object or held in a hand to show size.
  5. Lifestyle shot: Product being used in a real setting. This helps customers visualize ownership.
  6. Packaging: If packaging matters (gift items, premium products), show how it arrives.

Common Photography Mistakes

  • Inconsistent backgrounds: Use the same white background for all products. Consistency looks professional.
  • Poor lighting: Dark or yellow images make products look cheap. Use daylight or white LED lights.
  • Wrong proportions: Use a 1:1 square crop for marketplace listings. Most platforms expect this ratio.
  • Over-editing: Filters and heavy adjustments create unrealistic expectations. Keep editing minimal and accurate.
  • Low resolution: Always shoot at maximum resolution. You can always size down but cannot size up.

Image Optimization for Speed

Beautiful photos that load slowly hurt sales. Optimize every image:

  • Use WebP format (25-35% smaller than JPEG at equal quality)
  • Compress images to under 200KB each
  • Use lazy loading so images load as visitors scroll
  • Serve responsive images (smaller files on mobile, larger on desktop)
