Reactive server management means waiting for something to break and then scrambling to fix it. Proactive monitoring identifies issues before they become outages, giving you time to address problems during business hours instead of at 3 AM.

Key Server Metrics

CPU Usage

How hard your server processor is working. Normal: 20-40%. Elevated: 40-70%. Critical: over 80%. Sustained high CPU indicates you need code optimization or a server upgrade.

Memory (RAM)

How much memory your applications consume. Normal: 40-60%. Elevated: 60-80%. Critical: over 90%. Memory exhaustion causes crashes. Monitor for memory leaks from plugins or applications.

Disk Space

Storage usage. Keep below 80%. Databases grow over time, log files accumulate, and backups consume space. Automate log rotation and old backup cleanup.

Response Time

How quickly your server responds to requests. Target: under 200ms for the server response (TTFB). Slow responses indicate server overload, database issues, or application problems.

Setting Up Alerts

Configure alerts for:

  • Server down (immediate alert)
  • CPU over 80% for 5+ minutes
  • Memory over 90% for 5+ minutes
  • Disk usage over 85%
  • Response time over 3 seconds
  • SSL certificate expiring within 14 days
