Website security starts with SSL certificates and HTTPS. These are no longer optional features for security-conscious businesses. They are baseline requirements that affect everything from search rankings to customer trust to regulatory compliance.

How SSL and HTTPS Work

SSL certificates establish an encrypted connection between your web server and your visitors browsers. This encryption ensures that data transmitted in both directions cannot be intercepted or tampered with by third parties. HTTPS is the protocol that uses SSL encryption to secure web communications.

Why Every Business Website Needs HTTPS

Google uses HTTPS as a ranking signal. Browsers mark HTTP sites as "Not Secure." Customers see the padlock icon as a trust indicator. Contact forms, login pages, and e-commerce transactions require encryption to protect user data. Regulatory frameworks like GDPR require appropriate security measures.

Types of SSL Certificates

Domain Validation (DV) certificates verify domain ownership and are the most common type, available for free from providers like Let us Encrypt. Organization Validation (OV) certificates verify the business identity. Extended Validation (EV) certificates provide the highest level of verification. Most business websites are well-served by DV certificates.

Implementation and Maintenance

SSL certificate implementation involves obtaining the certificate, installing it on your web server, configuring HTTPS redirects, and updating internal links and resources. Most hosting providers simplify this process significantly. Certificates must be renewed before expiration to avoid security warnings.

Beyond SSL

While SSL is foundational, comprehensive website security includes many additional layers: security headers, content security policies, regular software updates, strong passwords, two-factor authentication, and regular security monitoring. SSL is the starting point, not the complete security solution.
