Addison is a working suburb of about 35,700 in DuPage County, roughly 20 miles west of downtown Chicago and minutes from O'Hare, that grew from a German-Lutheran farming settlement called Dunklee's Grove into a dense logistics and manufacturing hub. Today its warehouses and plants ship everything from restaurant parts to Pampered Chef kitchenware, while an annual Oktoberfest on the Village Green keeps its old-country roots alive.

About Addison
History. Settled in the 1830s and originally known as Dunklee's Grove (Dunkley's Grove) after pioneer settler Hezekiah Dunklee; the early community was predominantly German and Irish farmers. In 1832 General Winfield Scott's troops built Army Trail Road along an old Potawatomi trail that runs through the area. In 1864 the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod opened a teacher-training seminary (the Addison Teachers Seminary) that operated until 1913. Incorporated as a village in 1884 with about 400 residents and renamed Addison, reportedly after a town in England or Addison, New York. Post-World War II suburbanization exploded the population from under 1,000 in 1930 to about 35,000 by 1990 (35,702 at the 2020 census). In the late 1980s Addison's industrial district was floated as a possible relocation site for a rebuilt Comiskey Park (Chicago White Sox).
Local economy. A logistics, manufacturing, and food-distribution center positioned near major interstates and O'Hare International Airport. Largest employers include UPS (about 1,700 workers), restaurant-parts supplier Parts Town LLC (about 1,000), The Pampered Chef (about 700), and Walmart (about 350). Manufacturing anchors the local economy, making Addison one of DuPage County's larger industrial concentrations.
Culture and community. Celebrates its German heritage with the Addison Oktoberfest, featuring live music, authentic food, and German beers in a tent on the Village Green. Hometown or former home to hockey Hall of Famer Bobby Hull (the 'Golden Jet'), comedian Kyle Kinane, Olympic pairs figure skater Alexa Scimeca Knierim, and soccer goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina. Served by the Addison Center for the Arts and the Addison Public Library, which opened in 1962 and moved into a new building in 2008. A 'Marktplatz' of vendors and seasonal beers gives the Oktoberfest a German market-town feel.
What makes Addison distinct. The Coney-Island-style Adventureland amusement park operated in Addison during the 1960s and 1970s. The village's industrial district was once seriously discussed as a site to rebuild the Chicago White Sox' Comiskey Park. The town changed its name from Dunklee's Grove to Addison when it incorporated in 1884. Hockey legend Bobby Hull lived in Addison.
Addison is a DuPage County village that grew from under a thousand residents in 1930 to roughly 35,000 by 1990, with an economy built on logistics, manufacturing, and food distribution near O'Hare.
