History. Ralph Ely established the settlement in 1853, originally platted as Elyton. It incorporated as a village in 1872 and became a city in 1905. Lumberman Ammi Willard Wright (1822-1912), whose Ammi Wright Lumber Company held 30,000 acres of timberland in Gladwin, Clare and Roscommon counties, came to Alma in 1884 and bankrolled much of what followed. Wright promoted the Alma Springs Sanitarium, built in the 1880s, which first put the town on the national map and later became the Masonic Home. Work began in 1879 on the Wright Opera House, then only the second brick building in Alma. Alma College was founded in 1886 with Presbyterian roots that trace back to Scotland. Wright inaugurated Michigan's sugar beet industry; the Alma Sugar Company plant opened in 1899, the Alma Manufacturing Company gasoline engine plant in 1903, and the Central Michigan Produce Company in 1905. The Michigan Masonic Home, founded in 1891 in East Grand Rapids, relocated to Alma and opened to residents in 1911. The Republic Motor Truck Company built trucks in Alma from 1913 to 1929. By 1918 it was the largest exclusive truck manufacturer in the world, making one of every nine trucks on American roads, and was a major supplier of the standardized 3-ton Liberty truck to the American Expeditionary Forces.
Local economy. Agriculture anchors the surrounding area, which produces beans, corn and sugar beets. Alma College, a liberal arts institution of roughly 1,300 students, is the city's institutional anchor and a major employer. Masonic Pathways, the Michigan Masonic Home campus, provides independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing and rehabilitation, and has operated since 1891. Heavy manufacturing defined the twentieth century here through Republic Motor Truck and, later, Leonard Refineries, both now gone; the refinery site was cleared in 2003. The Gratiot County Fair for Youth fairgrounds on Lincoln Avenue draws regional agricultural traffic each summer. Downtown retail, antiques and the Pine River corridor support a small tourism trade built around the Scottish identity.
Culture and community. The Alma Highland Festival and Games has run since 1968 over Memorial Day weekend, with Highland dancing, piping, drumming and traditional Scottish heavy athletics. The first festival's opening ceremonies were held from the back of a truck; organizer Kenneth Jones (MacNeill of Barra) of Okemos predicted ten to fifteen pipe bands, two hundred competitors and 5,000 spectators. The Alma College Kiltie Marching Band, founded by students in the fall of 1922, led the inaugural festival parade and still performs in kilts. Alma College runs one of the country's strongest Highland Arts programs, drawing bagpipe and drumming students from across the continent. Alma College registered its own tartan in 1999. The Gratiot County Fair for Youth celebrates the county's agricultural roots with livestock, poultry, exhibits, carnival rides and contests.
