Antioch is a riverfront city in eastern Contra Costa County, sitting where the San Joaquin River meets the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta, hence its nickname 'Gateway to the Delta.' Founded by New England twin brothers in 1849 and renamed for the biblical city on the Fourth of July, 1851, it grew through coal mining, paper mills, and manufacturing into the county's third-largest city. Today it is a fast-growing, diverse suburb linked to the wider Bay Area by BART.

About Antioch
Also known as. Gateway to the Delta. Home of the Milk Carton.
History. John Marsh built a landing on the San Joaquin River in 1848, creating 'Marsh's Landing' to ship goods from his 17,000-acre Rancho Los Meganos. In 1849 twin brothers, Reverends William Wiggins Smith and Joseph Horton Smith, sailed from Boston and founded 'Smith's Landing' on land bought from Marsh. During a Fourth of July picnic in 1851, residents voted to rename the town Antioch after the biblical city, because the founding settlers were disciples of Christ. Incorporated as a city on February 6, 1872. In 1876 Antioch's Chinatown was destroyed by arson while the fire department reportedly refused to intervene, part of a dark chapter the city later moved to acknowledge with a Chinatown historic-district effort. Became an industrial hub in the late 1800s with coal mining, copper smelting, brick making, and one of the largest paper mills on the West Coast; a BART station opened in May 2018.
Local economy. Anchored historically by heavy manufacturing, paper and fiberboard, chemicals, and steel plants along the river. Top employers include Kaiser Permanente, the Antioch Unified School District, and Sutter Delta Medical Center. Health care, education, retail, and logistics now drive the local economy, along with commuter connections to the greater Bay Area via BART. Sits on the San Joaquin River / Stockton Deepwater Shipping Channel, historically important for shipping agricultural and industrial goods.
Culture and community. The Celebrate Antioch Foundation hosts an annual Jazz & Blues Festival at Williamson Ranch Park, plus a summer concert series and community events. The historic Rivertown district downtown preserves 19th-century buildings, shops, and dining, with heritage plaques telling the city's story. A notable roster of NFL players is tied to the city, and Testament vocalist Chuck Billy is among Antioch's music figures. Long-standing sister-city ties, including with Chichibu, Japan (since 1967) and Lazaro Cardenas, Mexico, reflect the city's international connections. A diverse, majority-minority population sustains a broad mix of cultural traditions and community festivals.
What makes Antioch distinct. A mid-1950s innovation at Antioch's Fibreboard operation, a wax coating for cardboard, helped spawn the modern milk, juice, and ice-cream carton, earning the city the title 'home of the milk carton.' Regional parks and preserves make up roughly 38% of the land within Antioch's city area. Kidnapping survivor Jaycee Lee Dugard was found held near Antioch in 2009, a case that drew national scrutiny of sex-offender oversight. The city's founding name was chosen by public vote at a Fourth of July picnic in 1851. The Antioch Dunes are the last refuge of endangered species found nowhere else, including Lange's metalmark butterfly and the Antioch Dunes evening primrose.
