Attleboro, a Bristol County city between Boston and Providence, earned the name 'The Jewelry City' by making a staggering share of the nation's rings, pins, and medals. At the industry's 1970s peak, about 20,000 of the city's 25,000 workers were employed in jewelry and metalwork, led by firms like the L.G. Balfour Company. Today the trade lives on through surviving manufacturers and Sensata Technologies, whose roots reach back to a 1916 metal-plating shop that supplied the jewelry trade.
AppWT works with Attleboro, MA businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.
About Attleboro
Also known as. The Jewelry City. Jewelry Capital of the World. A-Town.
History. English settlers arrived in the area in 1634 on land deeded by the Wampanoag; it was part of Rehoboth before separate incorporation as a town in 1694. Named after Attleborough, England, home of many early settlers. Jewelry-making took hold as an industry around 1780, followed by leather and textile manufacturing along the city's waterways. Reincorporated as a city in 1914. The L.G. Balfour Company, founded in 1913, helped make Attleboro 'The Jewelry Capital of the World' and the source of much of the nation's class rings, pins, badges, and commemorative medals. Jewelry production peaked in the 1970s, when roughly 20,000 of about 25,000 city workers were in the jewelry business.
Local economy. Historic center of American jewelry and findings manufacturing; surviving firms include Guyot Brothers (founded 1904), Leach & Garner, General Findings, and others. Sensata Technologies is headquartered in Attleboro (529 Pleasant Street); the business traces to the General Plate Company (1916), which supplied gold plate to the Rhode Island jewelry trade, later Metals & Controls, then Texas Instruments (1959), and became independent Sensata in 2006. The city was awarded about $5.4 million in state and federal funding in 2011 for downtown redevelopment.
Culture and community. La Salette Shrine's Christmas Festival of Lights, launched in 1953, displays several hundred thousand lights and draws large crowds from Thanksgiving through New Year's. Capron Park Zoo has operated since 1937, housing lions, leopards, kangaroos, lemurs, and other species. The Jewelry City Steampunk Festival began in 2017. The Attleboro (Blue Bombardiers)-North Attleborough Thanksgiving Day football rivalry dates to 1921, one of the oldest high-school football rivalries in the nation, and reached its 100th meeting. Cultural institutions include the Attleboro Arts Museum and an industrial/jewelry heritage museum scene.
