About Avon
History. In the seventeenth century the land that became Avon, Avon Lake, Bay Village and Westlake was a single territory inhabited by peoples including the Wyandots, Ottawas and Eries, who settled, traded, fought and were later forcibly moved elsewhere. Township Number 7 in Range 16 of the Western Reserve received its first permanent American settlers in 1814, a party from Montgomery County, New York led by Wilbur Cahoon. The township was administered by Dover township and lay in Cuyahoga County. Township Number 7 was organised in 1818 under the name Xeuma, and was afterwards renamed Troy Township. The township took the name Avon Township in 1824, when Lorain County gained its judicial independence. An Avon post office was established in 1825. The entire township was incorporated as a village in 1917. Avon became a city in 1961.
Local economy. UNVERIFIED. The article carries no economy section and names no employer or industry, so no economic profile is recorded here. The population history in the article shows the shape of the change without explaining its cause: 1,460 residents in 1920, 7,241 in 1980, 11,446 in 2000, then 21,193 in 2010 and 24,847 in 2020, a near doubling in the first decade of this century. Public investment recorded in the article includes a 16,000 square foot expansion of the Avon branch library, funded by a levy that passed in May 2020, broken ground in August 2021 and opened in January 2023.
Culture and community. The Avon Local School District runs three elementary schools, one middle school and Avon High School. Avon Middle School was named a National Blue Ribbon school by the United States Department of Education for 2020. Avon has a public library, a branch of the Lorain Public Library, expanded by 16,000 square feet and reopened in January 2023. Five properties in the city are on the National Register of Historic Places, three of them houses listed in the 1970s and two added in 2010. People connected with Avon and named in the article include a Hall of Fame professional footballer, a long-serving university swimming coach, a professional tenpin bowler, a two-time Most Valuable Player outfielder in Nippon Professional Baseball, and an early twentieth century investor and entrepreneur. Holders of political office listed in the article are deliberately omitted here. Avon's neighbours are Avon Lake to the north, Sheffield Lake to the northwest, Bay Village to the northeast, Sheffield to the west, Westlake to the east, Elyria to the southwest, North Ridgeville to the south and North Olmsted to the southeast.
What makes Avon distinct. BODY VERSUS INFOBOX DISAGREEMENT on area, in two of the three figures. The infobox gives 20.85 square miles total and 20.79 square miles of land; the Geography section gives 20.87 square miles total and 20.81 square miles of land. Both pairs are reproduced and neither is silently preferred. The two agree on 0.06 square miles of water. The township carried the name Xeuma when it was organised in 1818, before becoming Troy Township and then Avon Township. The article offers no explanation of the word. APPARENT CROSS-ARTICLE CONTRADICTION, RESOLVED ON A FULL READ, SO NOT FILED AS UNPUBLISHED. This article dates the creation of Lorain County to 1824, while the Avon Lake article dates it to 1822. The Lorain County article reconciles both: the county was physically established in 1822 and became judicially independent in 1824. Each city article states one half of a two-stage process, so the two are compatible and no dispute is recorded. STORE TYPE CHECK: the local-details store types Avon as 'city' and the article's opening sentence confirms a city. Store county 'Lorain County' matches the article. NAMESAKE CLEARED, TWICE OVER. This is Avon in Lorain County, Ohio, and not the Avon in Hendricks County, Indiana that was researched in an earlier round; the store holds both as separate rows and only the Ohio row was used. It is also a separate city from Avon Lake, its immediate northern neighbour in the same county, which has its own record in this round. Both articles' geographic-location templates agree on the adjacency and on the separateness. Avon has no published nickname. The field is left empty rather than filled with a slogan.
