History. 1861: surveyors Rudolph Papst and George Willis Pack, cutting the first state road through Huron County, camped near a mineral spring and found a much-used, badly damaged axe. Pack proposed "Bad Axe Camp"; Papst entered it in the survey minutes and marked it on a trail sign, and the name stuck. 1870: the community received a post office. In 1872 the Huron County supervisors voted to move the county seat to Bad Axe (the Port Austin courthouse had burned in 1864), and county records arrived in October 1873. September 5, 1881: the Thumb Fire burned more than a million acres in less than a day and killed 282 people across Huron, Tuscola, Sanilac and Lapeer counties. Bad Axe was destroyed except for its newly built brick courthouse and a handful of small houses. The 1881 fire relief was the first disaster relief operation ever mounted by the American Red Cross, founded by Clara Barton only months earlier in May 1881. Aid reached more than 14,000 displaced people, with distribution camps at Bad Axe and Harbor Beach running through December. 1882: rail service reached Bad Axe on the Port Austin line, driving the rebuild. A second connection, from Cass City via Grand Trunk, followed in 1913. March 19, 1885: incorporated as a village. In 1905 Bad Axe became Huron County's first city. 1909: a legislative act renamed the city "Huron," subject to local approval. The change failed and the original name was kept. Surveyor Rudolph Papst, a Civil War veteran, twice returned from his home in Lexington to argue for keeping the name. 1916-17: Albert E. Sleeper, Michigan's governor from 1917 to 1920, built his house on W. Huron Avenue and returned to Bad Axe after his term to run his banking and real estate businesses.

The city straddles two townships. Most of Bad Axe lies in Verona Township, with part in Colfax Township. The disaster that leveled the village in 1881 also created a milestone: the response was the American Red Cross's very first disaster relief operation, only four months after the organization was founded.
