About Bartlett

Also known as. Pig Town (historic).

History. The area was once hunting and camping ground for the Cherokee, Miami, Potawatomi, and Ottawa peoples. Luther Bartlett bought a 320-acre farm in Wayne Township in 1844 with his brother Lyman; in 1873 he donated money and half of his 40-acre woodlot toward a train depot, which is why the town bears his name. A petition for incorporation was filed in Springfield on February 11, 1891, and the village was formally incorporated on June 21, 1892. Bartlett experienced its most dramatic growth in the 1980s, when its population surged by roughly 278%. The population reached 41,105 by the 2020 census.

Local economy. Historically renowned as 'one of the premiere pig towns,' with pork as a major export for years. Modern retail is concentrated along Illinois Route 59 and Stearns Road. A commuter suburb served by Metra's Milwaukee District West Line, whose stop traces back to the original 1873 depot. Its territory spans Cook, DuPage, and Kane counties, an unusual three-county footprint.

Culture and community. The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, a Hindu temple that opened on August 8, 2004, is a cultural anchor and draws visitors regionally. An annual Independence Day festival features carnival rides, a parade, fireworks, skydivers, and even a turtle race. Villa Olivia, a year-round resort, offers downhill skiing, tubing, and snowboarding alongside an 18-hole golf course. The Bartlett Depot Museum interprets local history inside the original 1873 railroad station. Notable people include NHL player Vinnie Hinostroza and NFL player Jake Kumerow. Bartlett's Asian population grew from 2,854 in 2000 to 7,345 in 2020, a shift widely linked to the mandir's construction.

What makes Bartlett distinct. Bartlett lies across three separate counties, Cook, DuPage, and a small western sliver in Kane. A once-rural hog town now hosts the largest traditional stone-and-marble Hindu mandir in the United States. You can go downhill skiing and snowboarding at Villa Olivia without leaving the flat Chicago suburbs. The village is named after a man, Luther Bartlett, essentially because he helped pay for the town's train depot.

A suburban village in the northwest Chicago metropolitan area spanning Cook, DuPage, and Kane counties, with a large park district and a nationally noted Hindu temple.
