Web Design for Bay City, Michigan
Bay City sits where the Saginaw River meets Saginaw Bay, a Great Lakes port that once ran some 50 sawmills and called itself the Lumber Capital of the World. When the pine ran out, it pivoted to sugar-beet refining, shipbuilding, and heavy manufacturing, leaving behind a downtown of Victorian mansions and drawbridges. It is the county seat of Bay County and the hometown of Madonna.
AppWT serves Bay City and the surrounding Michigan area from Livonia, Michigan.
About Bay City
Also known as. Lumber Capital of the World. The Tri-Cities (with Saginaw and Midland).
History. Leon Tromble built a log cabin on the east bank of the Saginaw River in 1831, regarded as the first settler within what became Bay County. Originally called Lower Saginaw because deeper water there suited larger ships better than the shallower Saginaw settlement upriver. Renamed Bay City when Bay County was organized in 1857; incorporated as a city in 1865. Thrived during the Michigan lumber boom (roughly 1850-1890), then shifted to soft-coal mining, commercial fishing, and beet-sugar refining as the pine forests were depleted. The Wenonah Hotel fire on December 10, 1977 killed 10 people, the deadliest fire in Bay County history.
Local economy. Historic industries: lumber and milling, shipbuilding, sugar-beet refining, coal, and cement. Michigan Sugar Company is headquartered in Bay City. Top employers include McLaren Bay Region hospital (roughly 1,880 employees), Bay City Public Schools, and Bay County government. Manufacturing base includes S.C. Johnson & Son and General Motors Powertrain operations. A deepwater harbor makes it a port for Great Lakes and ocean shipping; the modern economy leans on tourism, agriculture (beans, beets, potatoes), and industry.
Culture and community. St. Stan's (St. Stanislaus) Polish Festival reflects the city's strong Polish-Catholic heritage. River Roar hydroplane and powerboat races on the Saginaw River. Bay City Fireworks Festival, one of the larger Independence Day fireworks events in the region. Hell's Half Mile Film and Music Festival held downtown each fall. River of Time, a living-history reenactment along the riverfront.
What makes Bay City distinct. Madonna was born here in 1958 and once dismissed it as 'a little, smelly town'; the city long resisted a commemorative marker before finally installing a Madonna sign in 2022. Annie Edson Taylor, who taught in the area, became the first person to survive going over Niagara Falls in a barrel (1901). The Scottish pop group Bay City Rollers reportedly took their name by throwing a dart at a map of the United States, landing on Bay City. Actress Marie Dressler, an Academy Award winner, and Pro Football Hall of Famer Bill Hewitt are among Bay City natives. The Liberty and Independence bridges were sold to a private operator and converted to toll bridges, with tolling beginning in 2023.
