Bayonne is a Hudson County peninsula city wedged between Newark Bay, New York Bay, and the Kill Van Kull, long defined by oil refining and its deep-water port. Once home to one of the world's largest Standard Oil refineries and a major Cold War military ocean terminal, it has redeveloped its waterfront around the Cape Liberty Cruise Port. Its skyline is anchored by the Bayonne Bridge, one of the longest steel-arch spans in the world.

About Bayonne
Also known as. Peninsula City. The Peninsula of Industry (historic). The Peninsula of Business and Technology.
History. Originally home to the Lenni-Lenape; the area, known as Bergen Neck, was claimed by the Dutch after Henry Hudson sailed past in 1609. Formed as an independent township on April 1, 1861, and reincorporated as a city on March 10, 1869. First mayor was Henry Meigs Jr. (1869-1879), who also served as president of the New York Stock Exchange in 1877-1878. Standard Oil took over a small refinery in 1877; by the 1920s it employed over 6,000 workers, making Bayonne one of the largest oil-refining centers in the world. The Bayonne refinery strikes of 1915-1916, led largely by Polish-American workers, turned violent and left several strikers dead. The Military Ocean Terminal operated from 1942 to 1999 and was later redeveloped into the Peninsula at Bayonne Harbor.
Local economy. Petroleum refining has been the historic backbone of the economy, though at a reduced scale from the early 20th century. Bayonne Medical Center, which opened in 1888, is among the city's largest employers. The Cape Liberty Cruise Port opened in 2004 at the former Military Ocean Terminal, marking the return of cruise departures to New Jersey. Henry Repeating Arms, a firearms manufacturer, relocated from Brooklyn to Bayonne in 2009. Logistics, port operations, healthcare, and professional services drive the modern economy alongside waterfront redevelopment.
Culture and community. An ethnically layered city with historic Italian, Irish, Polish, and African American communities and a large Hispanic population. Bayonne High School is noted as the only public school in New Jersey with an on-campus ice rink. Author George R.R. Martin was born in Bayonne in 1948 and grew up in the city's federal housing projects. Actor Frank Langella, a four-time Tony Award winner, was born in Bayonne and attended Bayonne High School. Actress Sandra Dee (born Alexandra Zuck in 1942) and cognitive linguist George Lakoff are also Bayonne natives.
What makes Bayonne distinct. 'Bayonne ham' (jambon de Bayonne) is not from New Jersey at all; it is a famous cured ham from the port city of Bayonne in the French Basque Country and Gascony. The 9/11 'Teardrop' memorial was a gift from the Russian people, designed by artist Zurab Tsereteli. The Bayonne Bridge's roadway was raised roughly 64 feet while keeping the historic arch intact so that Panamax-class ships could pass beneath it. Fantasy author George R.R. Martin has credited his Bayonne childhood, gazing across the water at unreachable Staten Island, as an early spur to his imagination.
