Baytown sits on the northern shore of Galveston Bay in Harris County, a Gulf Coast industrial city built on oil after the Goose Creek field boom of the 1910s and home to one of the largest refining and petrochemical complexes on Earth. It was formed in 1948 by merging three towns, Goose Creek, Pelly, and East Baytown, and pairs heavy industry with a 450-acre nature center reclaimed from land that sank into the bay. Roughly half of its residents are Hispanic, and native son Gary Busey is among its best-known figures.

About Baytown
Also known as. Part of the historic 'Tri-Cities' (Goose Creek, Pelly, and Baytown/East Baytown).
History. The Goose Creek Oil Field was discovered in the 1900s-1910s, sparking rapid growth in the neighboring communities of Goose Creek and Pelly. In 1916, one of the first over-water (offshore) oil drilling operations in Texas took place in the Goose Creek field. In 1917-1919 Ross S. Sterling and associates founded the Humble Oil and Refining Company, bought about 2,200 acres, named the site Baytown, and began building a refinery in the fall of 1919. Goose Creek incorporated in 1919 and Pelly in 1920, while company-dominated Baytown itself never separately incorporated. In 1947 Pelly and Goose Creek voted to consolidate under the name Baytown, and voters approved a new city charter on January 24, 1948. During World War II the federal government funded expansion of the Humble plant, which won early contracts in 1941 to produce toluene, a key ingredient in TNT.
Local economy. The ExxonMobil Baytown Complex (rooted in 1919) is one of the world's largest integrated refining and petrochemical operations; the Baytown Refinery is among the largest in the United States at hundreds of thousands of barrels per day. Covestro (formerly Bayer MaterialScience) operates a large U.S. chemical production site, and Chevron Phillips has run its Cedar Bayou plant since 1963. The Cedar Crossing Industrial Park hosts major distribution operations, including a Walmart import center (about 4.2 million square feet) and a Home Depot distribution hub. ExxonMobil estimates its regional Baytown-area operations contribute more than $7 billion a year and support close to 15,000 direct and indirect jobs. Lee College is a major community college and workforce-training anchor in the city.
Culture and community. A majority-minority city where about half of residents are Hispanic or Latino, reflected in events and food. Grito Fest, held in October at Bicentennial Park, features mariachi bands, folklorico dancers, and salsa competitions. Bicentennial Park, established in 1976, hosts Fourth of July, Juneteenth, and other community celebrations, and the city holds the annual Texas Street Fest. The Baytown Little Theater is cited as one of the longest continuously running community theaters in Texas. Additional arts institutions include the Baytown Symphony Orchestra and the Art League of Baytown (established 1954). Ross S. Sterling High School is named for the oil pioneer and Texas governor tied to the city's founding.
What makes Baytown distinct. The Baytown Nature Center occupies the former Brownwood subdivision, which sank into Galveston Bay from decades of groundwater withdrawal and storm flooding and was later reclaimed as a preserve, so 'nature' views there mix with views of surrounding industry. The city is bordered by water on three sides, including Galveston Bay and Cedar Bayou. The Goose Creek Library, opened in 1925, is cited as the first county library in Texas. Notable natives include actor Gary Busey, 1960s R&B singer Joe Tex, and country/'The Voice' artist RaeLynn.
