About Bellflower
Also known as. The Friendly City.
History. The original land title traces to a 1784 Spanish land grant, one of the earliest in California, in territory later farmed by Dutch, Japanese, and Portuguese settlers. Real estate investor F.E. Woodruff founded the townsite in 1906; a post office opened in 1909 under the name 'Somerset.' The U.S. Post Office rejected 'Somerset' to avoid confusion with Somerset, Colorado, so the town was renamed for the bellflower apple grown in local orchards. Bellflower and neighboring Paramount served first as apple-growing centers and later as milk-production centers for Southern California before postwar suburbanization. The city formally incorporated on September 3, 1957.
Local economy. The economy shifted from dairy and agriculture to residential and service/retail after World War II as land values rose. Kaiser Permanente Medical Group is among the largest employers (around 419 workers), reflecting a healthcare anchor. Food service and retail are significant employers, including a large local McDonald's franchise operation and the regional favorite Taco Nazo (about 196 workers). Retail corridors along Bellflower and Alondra Boulevards host national chains and small independent shops. 2023 median household income was about $77,602.
Culture and community. The city hosts a Summer Streetfest on Bellflower Boulevard with music, dancing, crafts, food vendors, and inflatables. The Bellflower July 4th Spectacular draws thousands for live bands, food, and a fireworks show launched from park grounds. The Bellflower Boulevard Car Show features classic and custom vehicles. Seasonal events include rooftop movie nights and an annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. The population is majority Hispanic/Latino (about 57%), shaping the local food and cultural scene. Bellflower maintains a sister-city relationship with Los Mochis, Sinaloa, Mexico.
What makes Bellflower distinct. The city is named after a variety of apple, the bellflower, once grown in local orchards. It ranks among the most densely populated U.S. cities with more than 50,000 residents. Bellflower has produced an unusually deep bench of notable people, including MLB players Nomar Garciaparra and Jeff Kent, ballet dancer Misty Copeland, 'X-Files' creator Chris Carter, and actress Wendi McLendon-Covey. The city motto is 'Growing Together.'
