History. Iron ore was discovered in 1880 when hunter and trapper Richard Langford found ore under an overturned birch tree; mining operations began in 1883. The Milwaukee Lake Shore and Western Railroad platted the town in 1884; Bessemer incorporated as a village in 1887 and as a city in 1889. The city is named for Sir Henry Bessemer (1813-1898), the English inventor of the Bessemer steel-making process, who never lived there. In an 1887 county-seat election against Ironwood, accounts say Ironwood voters headed to vote were plied with drink and their train did not stop at the voting site, helping Bessemer win the county seat. From 1884 through the end of 1958, Gogebic County shipped more than 245 million tons of iron ore; the Peterson Mine, the last mine in Bessemer, closed in 1966. The 2020 census counted 1,805 residents.
Local economy. The economy was built on iron mining of the Gogebic Range, the last of the three great Upper Peninsula iron fields to open. After the mines closed, many residents left for automobile factories in Kenosha, Wisconsin, and the population fell sharply. Today the economy leans on winter tourism, forestry, and services, anchored by nearby ski resorts and snowmobile trails. As the Gogebic County seat, Bessemer runs on a council-manager government with a five-member city council.
Culture and community. Bessemer High School teams are the Speedboys and Speedgirls, one of Michigan's most distinctive school nicknames, represented by a winged-foot emblem. The town is a winter-sports hub, with cross-country skiing, downhill skiing, and snowmobiling central to local identity. Big Snow Country regularly receives heavy Lake Superior lake-effect snow, drawing seasonal visitors.
