History. Settled around 1895 by Captain Thomas Moore Rickards, a surveyor and agent for Henry Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway, which reached the area that year. First incorporated as 'Bocaratone' on August 2, 1924, then reincorporated as 'Boca Raton' on May 26, 1925; the 1920 population was only about 100. Architect Addison Mizner was appointed Town Planner in 1924 and formed a development company that issued $5 million in stock in 1925, fully subscribed within a week, to build 'the foremost resort city on the North American continent.' A U.S. Army Air Forces base was established in 1942 on land taken from the Japanese Yamato Colony, becoming the only U.S. facility training radar operators and a major B-29 bomber training site; the grounds later became Florida Atlantic University, whose parking lots sit on former runways. In 1965 IBM secretly bought several hundred acres, built a Marcel Breuer-designed complex dedicated in 1970, and in August 1981 introduced the IBM Personal Computer from its Boca Raton operation; by 1984 IBM was Palm Beach County's largest employer with about 8,500 local workers.
