Bolingbrook is a fast-grown southwest Chicago suburb, a 1960s planned community on former Gateway Wetlands that became Will County's second-largest municipality after Joliet. Its motto is 'A place to grow,' and its economy runs on the I-55/I-355 logistics corridor plus the headquarters of Ulta Beauty and WeatherTech. It is also home to the whimsically named Clow International Airport, a small general-aviation field, and it opened one of the nation's first indoor wave pools back in 1982.

About Bolingbrook
Also known as. The Brook.
History. The first settlement in the area dates to 1831, but the farming crossroads stayed unincorporated for over 130 years. The village was built as a planned community on the Gateway Wetlands west of the Des Plaines River during the 1960s. Bolingbrook incorporated on October 6, 1965, with John J. 'Jack' Leonard, a driving force behind incorporation, serving as its first mayor. The village grew rapidly through the 1980s and 1990s to become Will County's second-largest town; the 2020 population was 73,922. The name is generally taken to mean 'a brook flowing through a hollow.'
Local economy. The economy is diverse across manufacturing, healthcare, retail, logistics, and technology, aided by its position on the Interstate 55 corridor. Amazon is the largest employer with about 7,000 workers, followed by area school districts and hospitals such as Silver Cross and Presence St. Joseph Medical Center. Ulta Beauty, the cosmetics retailer, is headquartered in Bolingbrook. WeatherTech, the vehicle floor-liner manufacturer, is headquartered in Bolingbrook. The village hosts a range of retail and warehousing operations, including an IKEA store on East Boughton Road.
Culture and community. The Cavalcade of Planes is an annual June aviation festival at Clow International Airport featuring historic aircraft, flyovers, and rides. The Illinois Aviation Museum operates at Clow airport. Bolingbrook maintains sister-city relationships spanning four continents, including San Pablo City (Philippines), Sialkot (Pakistan), Xuchang (China), and Brazzaville (Republic of the Congo). The village supports extensive parks and recreation, including nature programming at Hidden Oaks Nature Center.
What makes Bolingbrook distinct. Bolingbrook opened one of the first indoor wave pools in the United States, with a grand opening on November 6, 1982. Its 'International' airport is a modest general-aviation strip, a tongue-in-cheek name locals embrace. Former Bolingbrook police sergeant Drew Peterson, later convicted of murder, is among the town's most infamous former residents. Two national brands, Ulta Beauty and WeatherTech, both chose this single suburb for their corporate headquarters.
Bolingbrook is a large southwest suburb of Chicago located primarily in Will County, with a portion extending into DuPage County. It grew rapidly from farmland into a planned residential and commercial community.
