History. First settled in 1856 by the families of John Dixon and John Miller; the Boyne River was named after Ireland's River Boyne because it reminded pioneer Harriet Miller of her homeland. Incorporated as a village in 1885, renamed Boyne City in 1904, and chartered as a city in 1907. A lumber boom from the mid-1880s through the 1920s was driven by Ontario native William H. White, who founded W.H. White & Company in 1883 and built the Boyne City Railroad in 1893 to haul logs from remote timberlands. A destructive fire struck the city in 1908. Nearby Boyne Mountain ski resort was founded in 1947 by Everett F. Kircher, launching what became the Boyne USA / Boyne Resorts empire.

Local economy. Major employers include Honeywell Aerospace at 375 N Lake Street (precision aerospace products, roughly 200 employees), Boyne USA / Boyne Resorts, Charlevoix Area Hospital, and Charlevoix County government. The historic economy was built on lumber and sawmills processing white pine and hemlock along Lake Charlevoix. Today tourism and downtown retail dominate; the downtown added 91 net new businesses since 2003 and has a vacancy rate of about 1 percent. The Beulah Home, opened in 1902 to house delinquent boys, closed in 1912 after founder Herman Swift's molestation case reached the Michigan Supreme Court, where he was acquitted.
