Bradenton is the seat of Manatee County on Florida's Gulf Coast, sitting along the south bank of the Manatee River near where Hernando de Soto landed in 1539. Officially 'The Friendly City,' it gave the world Tropicana orange juice and the Bealls department-store chain, and it hosts the Pittsburgh Pirates each spring at the oldest ballpark in the Grapefruit League. An artsy riverfront town, it balances agricultural roots with tourism, sports training, and a colorful arts district.

About Bradenton
Also known as. The Friendly City.
History. The area marks Hernando de Soto's May 1539 landing in Florida, commemorated by the long-running De Soto Heritage Festival. The city was named for settlers Hector and Joseph Braden; Joseph built Braden Castle in 1854. A clerical misspelling produced 'Braidentown'; on February 1, 1905, the 'i' was dropped to make 'Bradentown.' On December 1, 1924, the state legislature renamed the town Bradenton and adopted the motto 'The Friendly City.' The neighboring town of Manatee merged with Bradenton by 1943.
Local economy. The economy rests on tourism and agricultural products. Tropicana was founded in Bradenton in 1947 by an Italian immigrant who pioneered flash pasteurization, allowing fresh orange juice to ship nationwide. Bealls, the department-store chain, began as Robert M. Beall's 'Dollar Limit' store in 1915 and still keeps its headquarters in the area. Pittsburgh Pirates spring training and the globally known IMG Academy anchor a sizable sports economy.
Culture and community. The Village of the Arts is a 36-acre district of restored 1920s-30s cottages turned into galleries, studios, and eateries, with first-Friday and Saturday ArtWalks featuring live music and indie art. The De Soto Heritage Festival, run by the Hernando de Soto Historical Society, has been held for more than 80 years with a grand parade, seafood fest, and boat regatta. IMG Academy trains elite athletes in football, baseball, tennis, golf, and more, drawing talent worldwide. The Bradenton Riverwalk, a 1.5-mile riverfront green space, is a community gathering spot.
What makes Bradenton distinct. Snooty, born in 1948, lived at the Bradenton museum as the world's oldest known manatee in captivity, became Manatee County's official mascot in 1979, and greeted more than a million visitors before his death in 2017. Flash-pasteurized orange juice that let fresh OJ travel the country was invented right here. The nickname and civic identity literally trace to a 1924 legislative motto. A misspelled clerk's petition is why the name shifted from 'Braidentown' to 'Bradentown' before becoming Bradenton.
Riverfront county seat with a walkable downtown, an arts district, and Major League Baseball spring training. Bradenton anchors the Manatee County side of the Bradenton-Sarasota metro area.
