History. Established in 1876 and named after Edward Breitung, a miner and U.S. Representative from Michigan. In the fall of 1871, Indiana explorer John Lane Buell discovered an iron-ore outcrop while camping on what became Quinnesec Avenue; it grew into the Quinnesec Mine and the feature known as the 'Devil's Ice Box.' Buell hauled the first 53-ton ore shipment by sleigh and wagon to Menominee in 1874, where it smelted into high-quality iron and touched off Menominee Range mining. Quinnesec was platted in 1876; the Menominee River Railroad reached it in 1877 and pushed on to Iron Mountain by 1880. A disastrous fire destroyed the entire Quinnesec business district and several homes on May 18, 1906. Ford Motor Company's 1920 arrival in neighboring Kingsford spurred a building boom, roughly doubling Quinnesec's population as about 80 new homes went up in 1921-1922.

Local economy. Iron mining defined the early township economy, anchored by the Quinnesec Mine on the Menominee Range. Champion International built a pulp and paper mill at Quinnesec in 1985; now owned by Billerud, it produces graphic paper and market pulp and is a major employer (500+ workers). The Billerud Quinnesec Mill sits on the Menominee River in the southeast corner of Dickinson County and is the company's most recently built U.S. production unit. The township functions as a residential and industrial ring around the Iron Mountain-Kingsford urban core.

Culture and community. Early settler John Buell built the Pioneer School House (forerunner of the Breitung Township School District) and donated land for Catholic and Methodist churches.
