History. Bristol was incorporated as a town in 1785, named after Bristol, England. Clockmaking took root around 1790 when Gideon Roberts began making wooden-movement clocks and peddling them by horseback. By 1850 clock-related work employed roughly two-thirds of Bristol's population, directly in factories or in supporting trades like case-making and dial painting. The city was home to major clock firms including the E. Ingraham Company and the Sessions Clock Company. Bristol incorporated as a city in 1911. ESPN relocated to Bristol in 1979 and built its global headquarters there.
Local economy. ESPN is the largest taxpayer in Bristol and employs roughly 4,100 people at its campus. Barnes Group, founded in Bristol in 1857, is a diversified international manufacturer of precision metal components. Bristol Health, the local hospital system, employs about 1,100 people.
