The village was first named York, then renamed Bronson by the Michigan legislature in 1837. It was incorporated as a village in 1866 and became a city in 1934, adopting a council-manager charter in 1985. Branch County's growth accelerated after the Michigan Southern and Northern Indiana Railroad crossed the county in 1850. The city marked its sesquicentennial (150 years since 1866 incorporation) in 2016.

The industrial anchor is the former Douglas Autotech Corporation, founded in Bronson in 1902 as Warner & Douglas; co-founder Harry Douglas was a friend of Henry Ford and supplied automotive parts and steering columns to Ford.
