History. Established in 1879 as a station on the Port Huron and Northwestern Railway, later part of the Pere Marquette and then the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway (merged 1947). Incorporated as a village in 1887 and as a city in 1907. Downtown developed sturdy brick storefronts with general stores, banks, and hotels including the Harrington Hotel and Carroll House; the Joseph Bros. Garment Factory closed in January 1927. The Brown City Elevator, run by the Eureka Milling & Elevator Co., was listed in a 1914 Michigan state report and handled grain and beans for shipment. In 1998 residents approved a charter ending the city's fourth-class status, and the Huron and Eastern Railway purchased the former CSX Port Huron Subdivision.
