Web Design for Brownsville, Texas

Brownsville sits at the southernmost tip of Texas on the Rio Grande, directly across from Matamoros, Mexico, a bilingual, subtropical border city where two nations share one culture. Founded around a Mexican-American War fort, it now hosts SpaceX's Starbase launch site at nearby Boca Chica, pairing 19th-century battlefields with 21st-century rockets. Palm trees, ocelots, and a deep-water seaport give it a character unlike anywhere else in the state.

AppWT works with Brownsville, TX businesses from Livonia, Michigan, mostly online and travelling as needed.

About Brownsville

Also known as. On the Border, by the Sea. Gateway to Mexico. Chess Capital of the U.S. (school-chess reputation).

History. The site was part of a 1781 Spanish land grant of fifty-nine leagues to Jose Salvador de la Garza, whose ranch stood northwest of the present city. The city was founded in 1848 by American entrepreneur Charles Stillman and named for Fort Brown, itself named after Major Jacob Brown, a U.S. Army officer killed during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848). Brownsville became the county seat of the newly created Cameron County on January 13, 1849; the county was named for Ewen Cameron, a soldier executed by a Mexican firing squad. The Battle of Palmito Ranch, fought east of Brownsville on May 12-13, 1865, is considered by many the last land battle of the American Civil War; it was a Confederate victory fought over a month after Lee's surrender at Appomattox.

Local economy. The Port of Brownsville is a deep-water seaport and a major hub for steel, petroleum products, and shipbreaking/recycling. SpaceX operates its Starbase Starship development and launch facility at nearby Boca Chica, transforming the area into one of the nation's most active spaceports (authorized for 25 launches per year). Historic industries include shrimping (one of the country's leading shrimp shippers), citrus and vegetable agriculture from the Rio Grande Valley, petrochemicals, aircraft repair, and food processing. Cross-border trade with Matamoros has anchored the economy since the 1800s, when Brownsville overtook Matamoros as the leading trade center for northern Mexico.

Culture and community. Charro Days, first celebrated in 1938, is a four-day, two-nation pre-Lenten fiesta held jointly with Matamoros honoring Mexican charro (gentleman-cowboy) culture. The Sombrero Festival, founded in 1986 by Danny Loff, is a three-day companion celebration to Charro Days with food, music, and a jalapeno-eating contest. Strong bilingual, Tex-Mex Mexican-American culture shapes the food, music, and daily life of the border community. Kris Kristofferson, the Rhodes Scholar songwriter and actor, was born in Brownsville in 1936 and called it his favorite place on Earth.

What makes Brownsville distinct. Private John J. Williams, killed at Palmito Ranch on May 13, 1865, is often cited as the last man to die in combat in the Civil War, in a battle the Confederates won after the war was effectively over. The landscape is threaded with "resacas" - oxbow lakes left by old channels of the Rio Grande that wind through neighborhoods and parks. Deep South Texas around Brownsville is the only place in the United States with a breeding population of wild ocelots, with only about 50 of the cats left nationwide. Charro Days is a genuinely binational holiday, with parades and celebrations crossing between Brownsville and Matamoros.

A bicultural border city at the southern tip of Texas on the Rio Grande, with a majority Hispanic population and close ties to Matamoros, Mexico.
